Giving ABC Scholars Access to the Stars
A community project by the Shoreline Astronomical Society & A Better Chance of Madison
There’s a quiet house on Durham Road in Madison, Connecticut, where big dreams take shape every day. It’s the home of A Better Chance of Madison (ABC) — a residential program that gives high‑potential high‑school students from underserved communities the opportunity to thrive academically, socially, and personally.
Inside that house, scholars work hard. They study, they grow, they plan for college and careers. But soon, thanks to a collaboration with the Shoreline Astronomical Society, they’ll be able to do something extraordinary:
Donate Here
They’ll explore the universe.
π A Telescope for the ABC House
We’re raising funds to place an 8-inch Dobsonian telescope at the ABC House — a powerful, easy‑to‑use instrument capable of revealing Saturn’s rings, Jupiter’s moons, star clusters, nebulae, and distant galaxies.
This telescope will live permanently at ABC, giving scholars nightly access to the sky. Whether it’s a quick look at the Moon after homework or a deep dive into the Orion Nebula on a clear weekend, the universe will be right outside their door.
And they won’t be alone. Members of the Shoreline Astronomical Society will:
Train scholars to use the telescope
Host observing nights and mini‑workshops
Maintain and service the instrument
Provide star charts, eyepieces, and guidance
This is a long‑term STEM resource — not a one‑time event.
π Why This Matters
⭐ Youth in Need Gain Access to the Cosmos
Many ABC Scholars come from communities where hands‑on astronomy experiences are rare or nonexistent. This telescope changes that. It gives them a chance to see the universe with their own eyes and not through a screen or textbook.
π A Spark for STEM Futures
Astronomy is a gateway science. One look at Saturn’s rings can ignite curiosity that leads to careers in physics, aerospace, engineering, computer science, and beyond. We want these scholars to feel that spark.
π‘ A Permanent Learning Tool
Because the telescope will be housed at the ABC House, scholars can use it anytime. It becomes part of their environment — a reminder that their future is vast, bright, and full of possibility.
π€ Community Collaboration
This project brings together:
A youth‑focused nonprofit
A science education nonprofit
Local families
Madison community members
Donors who believe in opportunity
It’s a small project with a big impact.
What We Need
We’re raising $800 to purchase the telescope and initial accessories. Every contribution — $10, $20, $50 — brings us closer to giving these scholars a window to the universe.
If you’d like to support the project, share this story, spread the word, or reach out to learn how you can help.
A First Light to Remember
Once the telescope arrives, we’ll host a First Light Celebration — an evening where ABC Scholars, Shoreline Astronomical Society members, and donors gather to witness the telescope’s first views together.
π Join Us
Together, we can give ABC Scholars access to the stars — and maybe inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and explorers.
